You would need the 2009 program but the file and probably are so old you might not be able to open it even then.
Sorry you need the 2009 program installed to open it. BUT they no longer have 2009 for sale or download. They only have the last 3 years. And even if you find the 2009 CD somewhere you won't be able to update it or download any state program you might need.
Why do you need a 2009 return that's 16 years old? Where did you get the .tax2009 file? Even the IRS doesn't keep tax returns over 7 years old. You would have needed to save it as a pdf file to view it.
If you just need to see the 2009 tax return you could try TaxPrinter. You send them your .tax2009 file and they send you back a PDF of the tax return, which you can then view or print with Acrobat Reader.
TaxPrinter has no connection with TurboTax. I have never used TaxPrinter, so I cannot make a recommendation. I'm just making you aware of it.
