You need to have Tirbo Tax 2016 loaded on your computer to open the 2016 return, etc for earlier years. The Turbo Tax matches the extension of the file with the year you are opening and because tax laws change every year you need can only load the file with the year it was intended for. I keep at least seven years worth of Turbo Tax on my computer at all times in the event I need to file an amendment to an earlier return. If you remove the older versions you will have to reload that years Turbo Tax. It is always a good idea to save a copy of your tax return (with all the worksheets and supporting documents in pdf, but then also save a copy of the forms that you just file. That way you can look at any supporting documents you had for that year, but also print a copy of only the return if you need to for other reasons. I'm sure you were hoping there was an easier year, but the versions are not backwards compatible. Sorry!!!
