To Amend your 2023 Tax Return in TurboTax (Form 1040-X you can follow the instructions below:
If you used TurboTax Online, you will
- log in to your account.
- On the "Tax Home" screen scroll down to "Your Tax Returns & Documents " and
- Select the year you want to amend
- Select "Amend" (change); return dropdown, then
- "Amend using TurboTax Online"
- Continue through your screens and make the necessary changes
- Answer all follow-up questions carefully
If you used our TurboTax Desktop (CD)
- Open TurboTax Desktop for the year you are amending (i.e. if you are amending a 2023 return, you must use the 2023 software)
- Select “Amend a filed return” under "Need to Amend a Filed Return?"
- Select "Amend" for the return you want to amend (if it is not an option, select "Find a Tax File")
- On the screen "Do You Need to Change Anything Else" make the changes you need to make
- Answer all of the follow-up questions
- Follow the TurboTax prompts to prepare your amended return
- Select "Save as" from the "File" menu to save a copy of your amended return.
Some things to keep in mind:
- Amend only if you need to make a change to a return you have already filed.
- Amended returns can take more than three months for the IRS to process.
- Gather your original tax return and any new documents needed to prepare your amended return.
- Print a copy of your return that you are amending and have it ready to refer to.
- Use the same TurboTax account you used to file your original return.
- Be sure to only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending
