Yes, in the FILE section, after you have paid for TurboTax Online, you'll be asked how you want to receive your refund. You can choose the same bank as last year, or use a different bank.
Here's more info on Refund Options.
so unfortunately, it’s not that straightforward and simple. TurboTax actually adds an additional $40-processing fee, on top of your regular fees, if you do need to update your direct deposit information. Which is absolutely absurd! There must be a way to get it done without this extra $$ nonsense they are forcing upon anyone who needs to simply update banking details.

No, that is not correct. Direct deposit information is NOT what that processing fee is for. Did you choose to pay your TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund? If so, that payment option is what is generating the $40 fee ($45 for California filers.) To avoid that extra $40 fee you have to decline the "pay out of refund" offer and choose to pay upfront with credit/debit card instead. So if you don't want that option, go back and pay by credit/debit card.
There is no extra fee to use direct deposit or to change the direct deposit info.
The deposit info can be updated using the steps below. According to the FAQ below, it can be changed when on the Get your refund up to 5 days early screen you choose "See All Options," and then choose Direct Deposit.
