How do I amend my 2023 California taxes?

I skipped 2022 taxes, so this year I did 2022 and 2023 taxes together, same form. I already received the federal refund, but not the state refund.  California wants me to report 2022 separate and amend 2023, since I have two different W2, that way they can give me the refund they owe me. I don't know what to put in the amend form and I don't know how to do 2022 taxes, since I cannot change the 2023 taxes. If you could help with this, I would appreciate it.

Wow.  You have to do each year separate.  You need to amend the 2023 return to take out all the 2022 info  and file a separate 2022 return.  How to Amend 2023

Sorry it's too late to start a 2022 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile 2022.

If you need to start 2022 you can buy the Desktop download here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products
You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

Yes---you made a big mistake by combining two years on one tax return.   That is not allowed.  Each tax year has its own software, written for the tax laws and using the forms for the specific tax year in which the income was received.  Some of the tax laws for 2022 and 2023 are different.   You cannot combine tax years.

You need to amend the federal return you filed and take away all of the 2022 income you entered and leave only the 2023 income.   So--of course your CA return was incorrect too and must be changed.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.

As for the 2022 software you need so that you can file a correct 2022 return---That requires the 2022 CD/download used on a full PC or Mac.  The 2022 return cannot be e-filed.  It must be mailed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2020, 2021, or 2022  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.
