Having trouble Amending, back to $0

I filed my taxes early on. I made the mistake of claiming myself as independent. When my father went to file his taxes, they were rejected because of this. I went back to amend my tax return through TurboTax and I selected myself as "Someone else can claim me: Yes" and "Someone else WILL claim me: Yes".

Immediately, it showed that I had to pay back over $2,500 to my federal return. This was over 2 weeks ago and I had saved the Amended progress.

Earlier today I go to fulfill the Amendment, however I decided to start from scratch. I select "Yes" to the same questions as before, however this time the $2,500 had gone down to $0 however the state refund stayed the same.

My question is, where did I mess up. I'm almost positive I still have to pay back the $2,500 however it is not showing it anymore.

The difference is in whether you marked that you had received your prior refund or not. It should be that you have received your refund and then need to pay it back. If you go into the new amend and mark that you have received your $2500 refund, it will show you owing again.

I've scoured the Amend pages and I cannot find any option that asks me if I have received my $2500 refund before.

Thank you for the help.

Even if you Amend your return, your dad will still have to mail in his return to claim you as his dependent.  He'll still get his correct refund though.

An Amended Return does not 'catch up' to your original return and correct it.  It is processed separately and can take 12-16 weeks to process.

The question about 'have you received your refund' is in the Amend interview.   Here's How to Cancel or Undo an Amendment so you can go through the screens again.
