Filed second W-2 after receiving refund from first W-2 filed

Your tax return was “just filed” or accepted, but you went back to it and “amended” by adding or changing something and you “e-filed” the changes?

That is not how to amend your return.  If you changed anything on your “just-filed” or already accepted return, and then “e-filed” the changes, those changes went nowhere.

When you amend a return you need to be working from the return as it was originally, so restore those “changes” you made to the way your return was before you tried to “fix” it.

The way to amend your tax return is to wait for it to be fully processed and you have received your refund.  Then you can use a form called the 1040X to prepare an amended tax return to add a W-2, your student loan interest, a 1099R, or whatever else you originally forgot to include.  (or to change a dependent’s status, etc.)

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 2-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.

If you have a second W-2 to add to your return, and you have already filed a return for 2019, you will need to amend. Amended returns must be printed and mailed. The IRS does not accept efiles. Be sure the IRS has processed your original return. The IRS will have copies of your W-2's from your employers. Amending will ensure you do not have problems with income match verification from the IRS in the future.

To amend, follow the steps below:

  1. Log into your TurboTax account
  2. Choose the tax year that you wish to amend
  3. Click Amend
  4. Make any necessary changes

Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are claiming any previously unreported income, you may see the difference as an amount owed.
