I attempted to e-file twice after choosing the checking account direct debit option for amount owed. The IRS rejected my return twice after I confirmed 2021's AGI and checked the taxpayer PINS. I've printed the return and am ready to mail after the appropriate signatures. However, the Amount You Owe line shows the bank routing number and checking account number XXXXXX'd out. Does that mean I must send a paper check along with the paper return or are the bank numbers XXXXXX'd out for privacy concerns? I don't want to pay the IRS twice then wait for a refund for overpayment. Thank you!

If the routing and account numbers are marked out on your return you've printed for mailing, there's no way the IRS would be able to direct debit your account for your taxes owed.
I'd mail your return that you have prepared, along with a check for the tax liability. OR (a better option, in my opinion), use IRS Direct Pay to pay your tax liability and avoid mailing your personal check. It's a quick and easy electronic option. I'm linking that info below.

Thank you so much! Much appreciated.
