According to IRS E-file. If you e-file your return but choose not to report each transaction on a
separate row on the electronic return, you must either (a) include Form 8949 as a PDF attachment to your return, or (b) attach Form 8949 to Form 8453 (or the appropriate form in the Form 8453 series) and mail the forms to the IRS. (However, you can't attach a paper Form 8949 to Form 8453-FE.) You can attach one or more statements containing all the same information as Form 8949, instead of attaching Form 8949, if the statements are in a format similar to Form 8949.
If I use Turbotax to Efile, how could I include Form 8949 as a PDF attachment to your return?
My 8949 has 400 pages, it would be costly and not green to print and mail it. I really don't want to do that if I can attach a pdf while efile.

TurboTax Online will accept a PDF file .
TurboTax CD/download did not, last year
maybe they've gotten better this year.
TurboTax does support uploading 8949, or a statement as an attachment to your return when you report your 1099-B trades as summary totals. The program will walk you through the process after you report your transactions. However, I recommend you print and mail your 8949 if it is 400 pages. The size of the PDF file will be so large that it my prevent the e-file from going properly transmitting.

For Box A and Box D, only wash sales have to be detailed on Form 8949 or equivalent.
Do not mail 400 pages of details to the IRS that are circumvented by the:
Detail Reporting Exception: if you summarize Category A or Category D, Form 8949 is not needed for transactions without adjustments. No mailing is necessary.
I have tons of wash sale, they are counted as adjustments.
The size of pdf only 916kb much lesser to the 20MB limitation. My issue is Turbotax failed to download transactions directly from etrade. A C/S told me to input summary amount in Turbotax and mail the detail to IRS. But print 400 pages is really a heavy burden. And IRS instruction state clear that you can attach your own 8949 while efiling.
"And IRS instruction state clear that you can attach your own 8949 while efiling."
You can attach your own PDF file only when TurboTax prompts you for the name of the PDF file.
When you summarized. did you check the box for adjustments and enter the disallowed amount?
This summary will go on Schedule D Line 1b.
You will be making the mail-in election.
Thanks for the reminder, I guess I didn't take a look at the real tax form. But it is very helpful. The Turbotax UI sometimes cannot express as clear as the origin tax form. But I already found that I can attach pdf in the online version. I return my CD version and open an online account. Online version is a new experience, and it looks better, but still have some detail missing compare to CD version. I wonder if the online version has the same feature like CD version can browse and edit IRS form directly.
"edit IRS form directly. "
No "Forms Mode" in TurboTax Online.
It is for taxpayers who are forms-challenged, even though correct forms is critical.
It's unclear why desktop program does not take a PDF file.
