Hi. I’m hoping you folks can help me with this…
I filed electronically with TTax and it was accepted by the IRS for EFT -- tax payment due on April 15th.
Yesterday I got an amended 1099-DIV from my broker. It was a simple update to the 1099-DIV form, box 5: "Section 199A dividends create a taxpayer-favorable federal income tax deduction. They are reported in Box 5 of Form 1099-DIV and should be reported on a taxpayer's federal income tax return."
When I started the amended return TTax reset my taxes owed field to zero. When I entered the new 199A amount TTax showed a refund due. This refund on the amended return was much smaller than the original taxes owed amount scheduled for EFT.
After electronically filing the amended return, on the Print and Save Your Tax Return screen, TTax said “Print and Mail These Forms to the Government. Even though you e-filed, don't skip this paperwork. These forms are required by the government to complete your return." so I clicked on "Print Forms".
The only thing that printed was a page of IRS addresses to send payments to, followed by a payment voucher with a new "Taxes Owed" number that was pretty close to the amount owed on the original filing -- the difference being approximately equal to the original amount owed less the refund from the amended return.
I don’t get it. Are they going to cancel the direct withdrawal EFT scheduled for the 15th, meaning that I should now send them a check for this new amount? Or do I just send the voucher in without a check? Or do I print a new complete copy of my amended return and mail it? If so, same question about payment? Or will they simply change the amount they pull on the 15th to this new net amount?
This is confusing to me and I hope someone can help clarify it.
Thanks in advance…

Your first draft you set up will still process. Amended returns take a while to be processed by the IRS so there will be no adjustment of the draft. You should not file the amended return without reporting this draft as a "payment with original filing". Then the amended return should show a small refund and the IRS will send this to you when they process the amendment.

Yes, you understand correctly! The payment will process and the refund will be processed when your amendment is processed by the IRS.
base on what you and others are posting recently about TurboTax amendment,
it sounds out of whack (i.e. incorrect results).
You should always review your 1040-X before you submit it.
Don't submit a 1040-X that you don't understand. (too late for that now).
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Not sure what I said that made you think I didn't review or didn't understand what I was submitting before submitting.
The question has to do with the EFT handling. Will the one set up for the first filing (1) still happen, (2) be amended to the corrected value, or (3) be canceled and I will need to send in a check with the payment voucher generated by the amended return?
But to your reply, incorrect from what? What do you think/know that it should be?
If your Form 1040-X is correct and shows an amount you owe Line 20,
you'd better pay it, or IRS will send you a bill with interest.

Thank you so much. I think it might be ok to do nothing more. If you don't mind, let me run this past you again.
The first e-filing was accepted by the IRS and included an EFT for $21,626 to be paid from my checking account this Friday, April 15th.
The amended return was also e-filed last evening, accepted by the IRS, and showed that I am due a $482 refund.
When I printed the forms from the TTax app it only provided the IRS mailing addresses and a payment voucher for $21,144.
I don't think that I need to do anything with that payment voucher since the original EFT for the larger amount will occur as scheduled.
Whew... Think I understood you correctly?
Yes, you understand correctly! The payment will process and the refund will be processed when your amendment is processed by the IRS.
This seems to be a couple years later, but I wanted to check in since I have pretty much the same question and am not sure what to do, and honestly, the responses don't really seem to actually address the specifics of the question being asked.
I too filed an amended return (didn't actually change the refund/owed amount), and I got the instructions to "Print and Mail These Forms to the Government. Even though you e-filed, don't skip this paperwork. These forms are required by the government to complete your return."
And like you, the only thing that showed when I went to print was a list of addresses and the payment voucher.
However, at this point my amendment for both state and federal have been accepted, so my question is the same as yours, do I actually need to mail anything in? If so, what do I mail in? Just this voucher? or do I also need to print off other documents (why would I need to mail documents in if the amendment has been accepted)?
And if the answer is I don't need to mail anything in, why would TurboTax explicitly tell me not to skip this step and that "“Print and Mail These Forms to the Government. Even though you e-filed, don't skip this paperwork. These forms are required by the government to complete your return."?
You will normally see the instruction to print and mail voucher forms if you e-filed a return that has a balance due and you indicated in TurboTax that you would pay by check.
If you filed an amended return that you confirmed has no balance due, then there is no reason to send in the voucher.
@MonikaK1 Thanks for the confirmation. And similarly, I don't need to mail in a copy of the amended return or anything either correct? Basically, I do not need to take any further steps, right?
If you have paid any taxes due with your original tax return and the e-filed amended return had no effect on your tax liability, you don't need to mail anything to the IRS. TurboTax includes those instructions in case an additional tax payment is due.
Note that it's always best to wait until the IRS has processed your original return (and any payment has cleared your bank) before submitting an amended return.
