do I have to amend state return due to an employer w2 error?

My employer sent me a w2c indicating the original w2 under reported my state income. However, I already filed my state return. Federal return should not be affected but my state return is. The new calculation indicates I own the state around one thousand. Should I amend my state return immediately or should I wait notice from my state and pay back after received the notice.

I filed the return with the best of my knowledge at the filing and the error is not on my part. Do I have to file the amendment?
Thanks.

If you are going to owe, then yes you need to file an amended return. You will do this because (1) your return is wrong (even if it was not your fault), and (2) interest on the unpaid tax will continue to accrue until you pay the tax.

You should file the state amendment if it has been several weeks since you made the original filing. Normally, they don't want you to amend until the original return has been processed, but this year, it may be very difficult to know when they might be.

So, just file the amendment and cut off the interest on the unpaid amount.
