Dependent, Ammendments

  • When I filed taxes this year I accidentally still had my child on as a dependent. I immediately efiled an amendment. This did not affect my return amount as I didn't do the child tax credit. My ex has to do a paper return I guess, he called them (we found out days after I amended this) I got message saying amendment was accepted, the message about not starting to process until the 15th, and that I should receive refund within whatever time frame. I amended before accepted/approved or processed. Will I still get my tax refund quickly? Since amounts are the same... it never said anything about taking longer because of the amendment but when my ex called and was told even though I amended he had to do paper return which won't be received by them right away... will they automatically flag my sons SS number and not process my return or will they refund it and just wait for his paper work and my amendment to go through

Dependent, Ammendments

Amendment processing is quite separate from original return processing. Hence, I imagine that if your return had only the Child Tax Credit, that it would come back in the usual 21 days that the IRS quotes. But if your return is asking for the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, refunds won't even begin processing until March 3, 2025. See What to Expect...

However, really, amendments are processed in months while original returns are processed in weeks. They won't flag anyone's original return because an amended return uses the same SSN for a dependent - indeed, they won't even notice.

It may take months for all of this to even out.
