CP2000 Notice Received - How Will This Affect My Current Tax Refund?

Hello,

I received a cp2000 that is asking me to agree or disagree with an adjustment to my previous year taxes where I owe $4400.00. I do not agree with this amount and I plan on filing an extension so that I can look into the previous year. I already efiled my taxes for this year with Turbo tax and they were accepted by the IRS. Will my current tax refund be delayed even though the process isn't completed and there is no current determination or decision of whether I truly owe or not? Or will they go ahead and send my refund because the CP2000 process is not yet complete and there is no determination?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

The CP2000 could cause a delay in any refunds you have coming.  But, because the system is automated and the notice has not been fully processed and no final determination made, you may receive the refund with no delay.  The important thing here is to follow the instructions and provide any information asked for in the letter.

The CP2000 notice means that the income and/or payment information the IRS has on file for you doesn’t match the information you reported in your return.

You’ll need to:

  • Carefully read your notice. There may be a number on the notice. If so, you can call at the number and speak with an IRS agent.
  • Complete the notice response form (if there is one, if not just follow the instructions).

If the information is wrong, contact the person or business reporting it and ask them to correct it and provide the IRS with the updated information.

Hi Dawn, thank you for answering my question. The issue here is that I called and it said they aren't currently taking calls but would open as soon as possible. Not really sure where to go from here.

I'll just keep trying to call for the extension and send a
letter in requesting one as well.

That is a good plan - keep calling and send a written request (keep copies of everything) also.  Just make sure to respond by the dates given in the letter.  I doubt your refund will delayed due to the notice, as there has been no determination made yet and you have already filed, but it is the IRS and anything is possible.....

since you have already filed your 2018 return with the IRS, you can not extend it because it has been accepted.

keep calling the number on the form to respond to the notice. you might even request an extension to respond because of the gov't shutdown.  can say the IRS will agree but you have nothing to lose. .  the IRS has order back its furloughed employees so processing returns can start as promised on 1/28.

My refund was given to me.

The IRS can delay your tax refund if a prior-year return is being looked at, although it's not a set-in-stone fact that they will.

Just be sure to respond with all the information they request by the deadline in the correspondence you received.

If they do hold your refund, it could take up to six months (and possibly longer) for the IRS to finish the review and release your refund.
