Hello,

I filed my taxes a few weeks ago. I was on unemployment for two weeks. Now with the new covid relief bill being passed, the info I provided is not accurate. I have already paid the amount I was told to pay. What should my next step be?

Thank you!

Please wait for a refund from the IRS.

The IRS will be adjusting all returns so there is no need to file an amended return.

I had to pay. I did not receive a refund. What should my next step be?

If you have already filed your 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR, there is no need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to figure the amount of unemployment compensation to exclude. The IRS will refigure your taxes using the excluded unemployment compensation amount and adjust your account accordingly. The IRS will send any refund amount directly to you.
