Corrected W-2 for local taxes

I efiled my Federal taxes and then discovered a mistake on my W-2. I now have a corrected W-2 from my employer, the correction only effects my local taxes. Do I need to file amended federal taxes? I don't think the updated local info effects my federal taxes at all, but not sure if IRS will expect a amended filing when they see the corrected W-2.

Corrected W-2 for local taxes

Yes, you should amend your tax return for a W-2C (corrected W-2) since it involves your local income amount and/or local tax withholding. In addition, if you itemize your deductions and your local taxes withheld were adjusted on a W-2C, then it may impact your Schedule A.

If your e-file is still pending, you won't be able to make changes until the IRS either accepts or rejects your return. Once accepted, please follow the directions on the How do I amend my 2020 return?

Once you elect to amend your return, please follow the steps below to enter your corrected W-2:

  1. Open your tax return.
  2. Search for W-2 with the magnifying glass tool on the top of the page.
  3. Select the Jump to W-2 link at the top of the search results.
  4. Select the trash can icon next to your original W-2 to remove it.
  5. Click on Add a W-2.
  6. Enter your corrected W-2 information.
  7. Continue to the screen Let's check for uncommon situations and select W-2 was corrected by my employer.
