My son is 28, going to school, no income. We support him, so we filled out turbo tax questions and it said he qualified as a dependant and I could get a tax deduction. How could that be true if he is 28yr old?

There is a category for dependency called qualifying relative. Since you provide more than half of his support and he earned less than $4,700 he qualifies.
For tax purposes, a dependent is someone “other than the taxpayer or spouse” who qualifies to be claimed by someone else on a tax return. A dependent is someone who relies on another person for financial support. Typically, this includes your children or other relatives. It can also include people who aren't directly related to you, such as a domestic partner.
