if you are not a professional gambler then gambling losses, not to exceed gambling winnings in the same year, are deductible on Schedule A. they only benefit you if your total itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction. there is no carryover for excess gambling losses

Gambling winnings are taxable income. Losses are an itemized deduction. If you do not have enough itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction, your losses will have no effect.
