Can I file an amendment for just my federal return or do I also have to amend my state return?

will your state change as a result of amending the federal. if yes you'll have to file an amended state because the IRS notifies states of amended returns.  if no you may still have to file because some states are so bad that they don't realize that the federal amendment has no effect on the state.
