Can I edit Form 3532 ?

You won't be able to edit the form if you are on the online version.

If in your Personal Info or My Info you entered that you were a resident of California AND that your filing status is Head of Household, then form CA 3532 will be added automatically to your state return.

If it isn't there, please open your return and go back to Personal Info/My Info and make sure that you are listed as a resident of California and that your filing status is Head of Household.

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

The Form (3532) has been added to my state return but it's been rejected bc a non-zero entry is required for the number of days the qualifying person lived with the taxpayer during the year and it seems I have to enter it manually.
Can you please help me to fix this issue,

Thanks and Regards,

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

I have the same error on my CA State Return.  The Form (3532) has been added to my state return but it's been rejected because a non-zero entry is required for the number of days the qualifying person lived with the taxpayer during the year.  But my qualifying parent lives in Mexico and not with me.  Zero days should be allowed to be transmitted.  Please help.

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

If your parent lives in a home that you pay to maintain then that home is - for all intents and purposes - considered part of your home.  They lived with you all year then.

Zero days is not a legit claim for filing for claiming a parent.

Here's a guide to Head of Household qualifications.

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

Hi Robert,

Can you please point to the instructions on the form where it states that the number of days to use is 365 if you maintain the home of a parent, but did not live with them?  FTB Publication 1540 states, "if you were unmarried and not an RDP, you may be eligible for the head of household filing status even if your father or mother did not live with you."  After meeting the eligibility requirements (qualifying relative test and paying more than half the costs of keeping up their home), individuals are allowed to claim their parents and essentially report "0" for the number of days they lived with them.  However, this is causing the CA tax return to be rejected through the TurboTax software.  Is there a way to edit the form and leave this section blank instead of inputting "0"? I am currently using the online version and will need assistance to get this issue resolved.  Thank you!

No. The form cannot be left blank or contain a -0-. According to FTb.ca.gov below are reasons HOH filing status are denied:

Here are the most common reasons you may be denied the HOH filing status:

Under the "General Rules":

The blank must be more that 183.

Hi Shirlyn,
I appreciate the response; however, the rules are different when you're claiming your parents as dependents.  Parent's do not need to meet the "living more than half the year" test in order for you to claim them on your tax return.   This is clearly stated on FTB Publication 1540.

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

I agree. See HERE . No where it it mentioned that parents must live with you more than 1/2 year inorder to claim them as dependents.

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

Hi, did anyone find a solution to this problem? I am seeing the exact same issue. Did TurboTax find a way to fix this?

Can I edit Form 3532 ?

Hi, the answer can't just be 'you can't edit the form', if we need to edit the form to re-file?  What are our options to proceed from here?

The solution that worked for me is to update the dependent's information under "My info" to show that the parent is living with you for 12 months.  Then delete form 3532 under the tools settings.  Once this is done, review your state return and the number of days on form 3532 should be updated to "365" days.  For purposes of e-filing the CA 540,  this will work.  However, please note that the instructions don't state that parents must live with you a full year to be claimed as dependents.  Thank you!

@all the Turbo Tax rep I worked with found the definitive answer to this issue:

https://www.ftb.ca.gov/tax-pros/efile/known-issues-solutions-and-faqs.html

(Look at the issue filed on Jan 26, 2023)

So it looks like the error is on the side of the STATE of CA. The options are to file manually or to wait until they fix their form validator and then e-file. Their estimated timeline was February, but there are no guarantees.
