Can I change the date the IRS gets paid from my bank account?

I accidentally clicked to pay the IRS via direct withdrawal from my bank account on the last day taxes are due (in April.) I would like to pay them ASAP. Is it possible to change it?

Can I change the date the IRS gets paid from my bank account?

If you have already filed and it's been accepted, you cannot change the date.   You can cancel it, however, and then pay by some other method, such as by check, or paying electronically at the IRS website, etc.  IRS Direct Pay at their website allows you to pay directly out of your bank account, and it's free.  Here's the link to IRS Direct Pay:
https://www.irs.gov/Payments

The IRS website says:

"Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method."

To cancel your payment you can go to the IRS website linked above.  Scroll down to "Cancellations, Errors and Questions."
It will tell you how to phone "IRS efile Payment Services" and cancel.

It says to wait 7-10 days after it's accepted before you call.

Be sure they really do cancel it, or you would get a surprise if they debit it again this spring.

Have you already filed, and has it been accepted?
If it rejects, you can make any changes you want.

If it's accepted, you can cancel the payment.  And then pay at the IRS website.   We can tell you more, when we know what you've done.

@taynabailey
This is an old thread from 2 years ago about an efiled return.  It sounds like your situation is different, but you haven't explained your situation.  If you're mailing a return, but haven't yet mailed it, we can tell you how to open an unfiled return to make any changes prior to filing.  Please start a new current thread at the link below where you can be questioned and assisted.

When you start your thread, you'll need to explain your situation in more detail.  The payment deadline for a Federal return that has taxes due was originally 4/17/2018 if no extension request was filed.  But because of the IRS technical problems on Tuesday, the IRS has extended the filing and paying deadline by one more day to 4/18/2018 for those who did not file an extension request.

When you go to the form at the link below, the first box is for a summary of your question, like a title, and is limited to 170 characters..  If you need more room, lower on the form you will come to another box with plenty of room to enter details.    This is a public Internet forum, so don't post any personal info.

I'll close this old thread.

Can I change the date the IRS gets paid from my bank account?

I had filed my federal taxes and set a direct debit payment date for April 15 prior to the pandemic.  Once I heard about the extension to July 15, I called the IRS automated service, cancelled the payment and received a confirmation number.   I then went to the IRS direct pay website and attempted to set a payment for July 15.  Unfortunately, the website will only allow scheduling up to one month in advance.  I have set up a reminder to do so on June 16.  I just hope I am not charged interest.  Any advice is appreciated.
