I have done my wifes taxes on turbo tax since I started using turbotax. Why cant I open a new return to do my wife's taxes?

Because you are not using the  Desktop/CD version.  The icon next to your question shows you are using the online version, which does only one return per account.  If you purchased ad installed the Desktop/CD version, you should have a TurboTax icon on your desktop and that's what you click on to start and continue returns.
