If I filed a amendment does it stop my first return or is it a separate return

I haven't mailed my amendment so my e-file will still be in effect and and then when I mail it will be a different check

An amended return does not stop or catch up to your original return. You will receive your refund for the amount listed in your original return. It takes 12 -16 weeks for the IRS to process an amended return. 3 weeks after you mailed your amendment, you can start tracking its progress at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.
