Amendment expenses

When doing an amendment, why does adding business expense only add the state refund but not the federal refund?  But adding things like charitable contributions add to both refunds sections?

Do amendments flag audits because its manual ?

Make sure you are entering your changes in the federal interview section of the program.  Any changes made in the federal interview section will flow into the state amended return.

This link provides guidance to make sure have started your amended return following the proper steps.

As for audits, that is determined by the taxing agencies and does vary from year to year.

I don’t know what you mean by making changes to federal section.  The amendment starts everything back at zero refund.  You add the business expenses under “business income and expenses “section.  It’s only adding to the state refund but federal refund is still zero.  Only when you add charitable contributions does the refund add to both the federal and state refund amount.  Is there a maximum limit on business expenses you can enter as it pertains to federal refund whereas charitable contributions is more personal and thus no limit?

TurboTax is broken down into interview sections, one for federal and one for state where state specific information is entered.

It sounds like you are making the entries in the business section, which would be located in the federal interview section.

I would suggest reviewing your forms and comparing them to the return as originally filed.  A possibility is the federal changes to your business activity do not affect your overall business loss which is why you aren't seeing any changes on the federal side.
