Amending filing status after refund issued

My wife and I submitted our taxes as married filing separately until I realized that I didn't need to. I would now like to amend my filing status. On my original tax return, I owed federal taxes and my wife received a refund. When filing, however, I requested that the payment be withdrawn from my bank account on 3/31, so I technically have not yet paid the taxes, but my federal tax return was approved.

I would now like to amend the tax return, and I went through the steps on TurboTax and now both my wife and I will receive a larger refund. Is there a way I can cancel the upcoming scheduled payment to the IRS on 3/31 to avoid paying the additional amount or can this amount be refunded after filing the amendment?

TO CANCEL A TAX PAYMENT YOU SCHEDULED

If your return was accepted, you cannot change your payment method  or payment date.  The only thing you can do is cancel the payment and then pay by a different method on your own.

  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to ask about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
