I need to file an amended 2024 return due to an unexpected W-2. My original return has already been filed. I followed these steps:
1. Open TurboTax desktop.
2. Click "Amend a Filed Return"
3. Click "Amend" for the original return
4. Add the missing W-2
It all seems fine, BUT View Forms shows a 1040, not a 1040-X.
How do I get a 1040-X?

The federal amended tax return, Form 1040-X, will not be available for filing until 02/13/2025
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Understood. Thank you.
When I try to amend.....the State tax owes goes to $0 which it should.....but the Federal jumps to a $10 refund. The math on the 1040x looks ok but the balances on the top of the desktop software are wrong. Anyone else seeing this. It makes me afraid to hit file!
The refund meter doesn't always start at zero. Follow these steps when amending a return:
If you prepared your original tax return using TurboTax, log in to your account, open the tax return you already filed, and click on the link to amend your return. From there, the software will walk you through the process of filing the amendment.
If you didn't use TurboTax to file your tax return, you can use TurboTax to prepare the amendment. However, you'll first have to enter your information into TurboTax to match what you filed the first time, then start the process of amending it.
Then, review the 1040X itself.
Column A should show the original amount reported
Column B should show the net change— amount of increase or (decrease)
Column C should show the new correct amount for the line item
There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:
See this article and this one for more information on filing an amended return with TurboTax.
The instructions say it will go to $0
And before I do a change, my refund shows $10k, substantially more than my original return.
I the minor change but after looking at the 1040x, was certainly afraid to file it. it seems $19,000 in income disappeared… and you sure can’t find it by trying to add the pieces up again. I believe there is something wrong
If the return information did not transfer over correctly for the amendment, cancel the amendment and start over. To do this in TurboTax Desktop, follow these steps:
Then restart the amendment process and see if the information is transferred correctly.
