While doing my 2024 Virginia tax return I noticed that I missed a deduction I should have taken in 2023. I completed the amended return and I should be getting a refund of $1,150., but the top of the filing document states that I have a balance due of $1,817. The 2023 Virginia tax return summary shows a refund of $1150. Adding those 2 amounts is what I paid for that tax year. If I put that I'm paying by check and obviously never send it, would they see that they actually owe me a refund?
Why would an amended return show that I owe money and get a refund in the same document?
Thanks for any guidance.

Yes, if you are saying that you paid the state 2,967 for tax Year 2023, and the amended return is showing 1,817 and 1,150, what the amended return is showing is this-
Your 2023 state return calculates that you have a tax due of 1,817
You already sent in 2,967 with the original return
You are now getting a refund of 1,150
You do not need to indicate paying by check, from what you describe, you are only owed a refund.
The 1,817 was paid when you sent in 2,967.
Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. The program is requiring me to enter my banking information for the payment. I'm afraid that if I select that option that the state will take the money before they figure out that they owe me money.
Try these steps to indicate you want your refund by check:
After logging back into your online account, click on Take Me to My Return
You will be back into your return that you completed before. Click on the File tab
Under this tab, next to Step 2, you can click Revisit. This will allow you to change how you receive your refund
It looks like the issue was that I went straight to my state return to amend it when I should have gone through my federal return and selected the option to amend the state. Thanks for the help.
