I’m trying to amend my 2021 federal taxes. The amendment should result in no change in tax due or refund owed to me. When I originally filed my 2021 taxes I received a refund of $2778.
After making the changes on the amended 1040-X it shows I am owed the same $2778. I expected it to show $0 since I already received the refund on the original filing. Is this correct? Does the IRS just look to see what they already paid me and call I good?
My amendment was just to revoke section 179 election and take bonus depreciation only. The net result should have no effect on income tax. It’s really just an informational amendment.

No, your 1040-X should reflect the $0.00 refund amount/amount due.
You may have forgotten to enter the $2,778 refund that you received with your original return.

Ok, thank you. I see that now. Should the 1040 that I include with my amendment line 34 show that $2778? It does show that and suspect that it should, I just want to verify. Thanks!
Yes, your 1040x should show the payment received from your original return. You are not sending a 1040. You are sending a 1040x with any forms that have changed- such as depreciation.
Ok thanks. TurboTax prints my entire federal return to include with my 1040x. I believe this is in error. I think part of the problem is that I had to rebuild my 2021 TT file because it was corrupt in order to do the amendment. So I think TT just thinks I need to include everything. If I understand correctly, I'll only include Form 4562 - Depreciation and Amortization along with my 1040x..
That is correct- you only have to send any forms that are different from how you filed originally. It's not necessarily that TurboTax thinks you have to send the whole file in, it' s the logic of which forms need to be included that needs to be improved. @Frohboy331
If no dollar amounts are changing, you can leave 1040-X lines 1-23 EMPTY.
in Part III explanation you tell the IRS why you are filing an amendment.
