So I obviously didn't check my return closely enough before filing and I'm just now realizing that none of my husband's income was included on the return just mine. Do I have to wait for the irs to accept the return to amend this issue?

Yes, before filing an amended return, make sure the IRS has already processed the tax return you need to amend. If you've already received your tax refund, then you know the IRS has already processed your return.
You will also have to wait because the IRS normally does not release Form 1040X, which is the form used to do amended returns, until the end of February.
If you would like more information about amended returns, see the article below:
Thanks. And no my return hasn't even been accepted yet. I was hoping I'd be able to amend it before I did receive a refund. My state return is correct but not federal which makes no sense to me.
No, you will need to amend your return after it is accepted. Once the IRS has had a chance to process it you can amend.
If, by chance, the IRS does reject your return you can fix it and resend it because a rejected return is not filed. As indicated by @LeticiaF1, an amendment is the only option if your return is accepted.
You will be able to access and file an amended return on approximately February 14th (Form 1040-X). Use the link here to check to see when available:
Be sure to read all the instructions carefully, before you begin, so that TurboTax knows the original numbers and the changed numbers for your amendment.
Thanks. Here's to hoping they just reject it so I can fix it right away instead of having to do an amendment.
