Amend an accepted 2024 return

I e-filed my 2024 return last night and received an email that it has been accepted.

I now realize that a W-2 was attributed to my spouse when it should have been my W-2 with my SSN, etc. Do I need to amend my return? Can/should I do it now? How do I amend it? This error does not affect the amount of our refund. I only need to correct the W-2 information. Thank you.

Amend an accepted 2024 return

Do not amend the 2024 return at this time.  See if the IRS process your return to completion and issues a refund. Or the IRS may send a letter if this issue affects the processing of the return.

Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

Amend an accepted 2024 return

You may get a tax notice that indicates the SSN does not match the name. If you are Married Filling Jointly it should not affect  the calculation of the return.

Do not file an amended return, you may not have to unless the IRS asks for it

  • You may get a notice requesting information.
    • Respond and the issue is resolved.
  • You may simply get a refund.
    • The calculation of the tax is correct.
    • You may get a clarifying notice in the future, but there will be no additional tax due
