Amend 2020

If I amended my 2020 return through e-file and it's been accepted, do I need to mail the 1040-X form in? Additionally, when I filed my amendment I put in my information to pay the amount due, but it has not shown up in my bank account, and in the instructions, it said to mail in a check, or pay using Direct Pay. So I paid with Direct Pay. Was this the wrong thing to do? Will my account get charged twice?

Taxes owed on a 2020 federal amended tax return, Form 1040-X, cannot be paid by direct debit from your bank account using the amended return.

You can only pay the taxes owed by check mailed to the IRS with a payment voucher, Form 1040-V, or use the IRS payment website for Direct Pay - https://www.irs.gov/payments

You will not be charged twice.  You correctly made the payment on the IRS website.

Thank you so much for replying. To clarify, I do not need to mail in the 1040-X if I e-filed?

do not mail in the 1040-X. that would create a duplicate amended return which could cause issues

direct pay is fine - I assume you choose the reason as amended return.

many taxpayers have complained that the IRS has not taken out the money by the date specified.
