A month ago I received a letter from the IRS asking us to send in copies of our W2's to support the income we claimed. I did so the next day. When will we get our refund?

Only the IRS would know that.  You can check the IRS website Where's My Refund, it might give you information on the processing of your return & your refund.

I was hoping to get an answer from someone who has experienced something like this before. Getting a hold of the IRS is not very easy, as we all know.

Since you did not state that in your question, I gave you the answer that can be given in a user to user forum.  Each processing of a return from the IRS is different, it can take 3 to 6 weeks to process a return once the IRS receives the paperwork but there is no definite time since it is the IRS.

You can also try the following to get an agent to talk to, it may or may not work

after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info).  Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".   

Then press 3 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."  

- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don’t enter anything.  

- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Then press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.

It should then transfer you to an agent.
