2018 amended tax return

Hi guys,

I recently (mid feb) amended 2018 tax return I filed on January 22, 2019. I amended this tax return to include the american opportunity tax credit.

It has been more than three weeks now and the irs tax tool isn't showing that they have received my amended taxes. I also amended my 2020 tax return to include the same credit. I mailed it in at the same time and it is showing up on the tool that they have received it.

I haven't been contacted by the irs about my 2018 amended tax return. Should I remail the amended return? What's the best way to go about this?

Thank you!

No, you should not re-mail in your amended returns.  That could really delay your return.  Amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process & longer since the IRS is backlogged. It can take up to three weeks from the date you mailed it to show up in our system. There's no need to call the IRS during that three-week period unless the tool specifically tells you to do so.

From the IRS:

We're open and processing mail, tax returns, payments, refunds and correspondence. However, COVID-19 continues to cause delays in some of our services. Our service delays include:

  • Live phone support
  • Processing tax returns filed on paper
  • Answering mail from taxpayers
  • Reviewing tax returns, even for returns filed electronically

The IRS website states that it is currently taking them more than 20 weeks to process amended returns.  The two returns may have been sorted into separate batches, just continue to keep checking the Amended Return Status tool periodically.  For more information, please see Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions

Thanks for the reply bludeb!

It has been longer than 3 weeks now and it is showing that they haven't received it.

Do you think I should just continue to wait?

Thank you

Yes, unfortunately, the IRS is backlogged and it is taking allot longer to process mailed in returns and longer for prior year amended returns.  Hopefully, your amended returns will show up in the IRS system soon.
