Question

I checked my refund status, and it says "still being processed a refund date will be provided when available" . Does anybody else have the same still processing message?

Yep. Ours was accepted 2/20 and it's still saying "still being processed...*"

Yes, me! I filed back on Feb 21st. Here it is April and I get “your return is still being processed”. I have called a few times, and the most I’m told is that there was a system file error that they are trying to resolve, and it could take weeks to fix.  Everyone I speak to says they cannot see any errors on my tax return, and no letters have been sent out saying I need to verify anything either.  It’s almost like it’s just stuck, but I’m told to wait a few weeks and it should resolve itself. It’s been three months now, and I had to pay my TurboTax filing fees out of pocket because there is no refund to pull the filing fee from. Frustrating, for sure!

If the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool at https://www.irs.gov/Refunds shows it's been processing longer than 21 days, you can phone the IRS to see if you can learn anything.

Here's how to reach a live agent at the IRS:

800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time)

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It might transfer you to an agent at that point.   If it doesn't it may ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal" then you should be transferred.

I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

What is the phone # for the IRS that people are using?  I have looked and cannot find a phone #, except for the local IRS office, which when you call it, it says they do not accept phone calls!  It's been over 3 months since I filed, and the online status just says "we are processing your return".  This is maddening!

@psg559tt

I'll tell you how to reach a live IRS agent below.   If you can't get good answers from the IRS, I'll also be telling you below how to contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.

It sounds like you chose to pay your product fees out of the Federal refund.    TurboTax would have started billing you to pay in either of the following 2 scenarios:   1) the refund was delayed an unusually long time at the IRS or 2) if the IRS were to reduce a refund to the point where it no longer covered the fees.

After the refund had been delayed so long, TurboTax would have sent emails with a bill asking to be paid.  Finally, they send an email that they are about to debit your bank account, and if still not responded to by either paying or asking for a deferment of the fees, they go ahead and debit the account.

If a debit from TurboTax for your product fees caused a NSF fee (non-sufficient funds fee), there is an appeal process at TurboTax Support.   Here's how to reach them to tell them your bank account was overdrawn.

Hours are 5AM-5PM Pacific (8AM-8PM Eastern) Monday-Friday.

Is there any clue as to why your Federal refund was delayed when you look at the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool here?   Is there any IRS message there?

If you don't get good info/results from the IRS, you can contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate for your area.   They are especially prone to help if you have a hardship, or if there have been continued delays with lack of info from the IRS.    At the following IRS website, find the USA map and click on your state, and it will give you the number of your IRS Taxpayer Advocate.

We filed in March and ours still shows the still processing message.  We also received the letter from the IRS stating they needed an additional 60 days.  Our 60 days from the date of the letter will be up next week.   It's definitely not a Turbo Tax issue.  We have relatives that filed with other companies, and they too have not received their refunds.  This mess is putting a lot of people in a financial bind.

I finally got my refund.  It took almost 5 months and a call to the IRS.  I think my return was in some kind of limbo state - when I called and the rep looked at it, he didn't understand why it hadn't been processed, but he put a "referral" on it to be looked at.  He said that could take another 60 days, which didn't make me feel comfortable at all, since I had already been waiting 4 months.  But it "only" took another 4 weeks, so 5 months total.  I really think if I hadn't called, my refund would still be in limbo.  Funny, I couldn't find the phone number anywhere on the IRS web site - I got it here from a helpful soul - thank you @mesquitebean

In case you are in the same boat, the phone number is [phone number removed].

For some reason, this website is removing the phone # from my post.  It is listed a couple of times earlier in this thread.

Mine was accepted in February. Got a letter in March saying to call the IRS called and verified it was me. The lady then gave another number to call if I don’t receive it in 45 days. I called that number but never got through to a person. It still says being processed.
