Question

Can my refund be offset durring forbearance?

I recently had my refund offset by the department of education for a student loan. However, I'm currently in forbearance and filed during this period. I have checked my account, and it is showing in good standing (not in default).  Can my refund be taken during forbearance or deferment.

No, your refund shouldn't be offset if your account shows as in good standing. Refunds are only offset when your account is in default, and there is an offset placed on your account.

    How to Dispute Offset.

If you wish to dispute the offset, you should contact the agency that received the offset payment. Only contact the IRS if your offset payment was applied to a federal tax debt.
