Amending and stimulus

So my mom didn’t claim me because we found out that the previous stimulus checks will come to me if she didn’t claim. She told me this after I already filled out my taxes saying she would claim me. Would an amended return fix this situation?

If you can be claimed as a dependent by another person, then you are not eligible for the stimulus payments.  Your mother should have claimed you and it is her return that should be amended.

Being able to be claimed as a dependent by another person make you ineligible for the stimulus, even if that person does not claim you.

I put that I was being claimed on mine, she unclaimed me on hers. If I amend mine saying I’m unclaimed would that fix it?

    It depends on your circumstances.

To not be claimed as a dependent, you must provide more than 50% of your own support. The first and second stimulus payments included an extra payment for children under 17 years old.

    • If you are 17 or older, but she provides more than 50% of your support, neither of you will receive any stimulus payments for you, regardless.
    • If you do provide more than 50% of your own support, and could not be claimed as a dependent, then you can amend your return.

The amendment can be e-filed once Form 1040-X becomes available. The only states that offer e-file for amended returns are currently Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Vermont. Otherwise, the corresponding state amended return must be paper filed.

    To amend, follow these steps:

    • With the tax return open after having filed the return, the return will be at Tax Home
    • Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Show.
    • Select Amend(change) my return and follow the prompts.
    • At My Info on the left menu.
      • Scroll down to edit the related information about dependency.
    • Run the review again.
