Did you Itemize Deductions last year?  How did you get 25K?  What is your filing status?  Did you have more than 2 personal exemptions last year?  Like several dependents?

Personal exemptions have been eliminated for 2018-2025.  You now get a double Standard Deduction.

FAQ on 2018 changes <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4482394-how-will-tax-reform-affect-my-2018-federal-tax-return">htt...>

For 2018 the standard deduction amounts are:
Single 12,000 + 1,600 for 65 and over or blind
HOH 18,000 + 1,600 for 65 and over or blind
Joint 24,000+ 1,300 for each 65 and over or blind
Married filing Separate 12,000 + 1,300 for 65 and over or blind

I filled as single both in this and last year, no dependents. did not itemize.  it says exemptions/deductions 2017 (~25K) and exemptions/deductions 2018 (~12k).

I don't know where it got 25K for 2017.  You would have to look at your return.  2017 you got a $4,050 personal exemption and a $6,350 Standard Deduction for a total of 10,400.  Don't go by any summary or review screens.

But for 2018 you only get a 12,000 Standard Deduction for Single and no personal exemption.

That summary page ("Divikup, Here are Your 2017 and 2018 Deductions and Credits") also includes "Adjustments to Income", under deductions, in addition to actual deductions and exemptions. Adjustments are in addition to the standard (or itemized ) deduction.

Common adjustments are:

  • IRA deduction
  • HSA deduction
  • Tuition and fees deductions (2017 only)
  • Moving expenses (2017 only)
  • Student Loan Interest deduction
