Is it possible after filing injured spouse after refund was taken, to get a code 766 an NOT receive the refund?

If something can go wrong,  then it would happen to me.  All our refund was taken due to my wifes student loan debt.  Filed injured spouse form and got a 766 code with the new amount. Also under that there was a 971 code cp0021. Is it possible to have that 766 code and not receive it?  Couldn't find any information about cp0021.

I always worry the worst....  So trying to figure out if it's ever happened where you get a 766 reversal code and not receive that refund.

CP21 is a series of different notices for various situations. It's probably just telling you that they accepted your injured spouse filing. You will have to wait until you get the notice to see exactly what it says, but don't stress about it.

The last two entries in the account transcript that you posted have a date of 5/7/2018. While it doesn't say so explicitly, that leads me to believe that you won't get the refund until that date, and the CP21 notice might not even go into the mail until that date.

I don't know what those codes are, or where you are seeing them. They are not normal IRS e-file reject codes. But if you are filing the injured spouse form, Form 8379, by itself, separate from your tax return, you can't e-file it. You have to print it, sign it, and file it by mail.

If you are filing Form 8379 by itself, note the following from the IRS instructions for Form 8379.

"If you file Form 8379 separately, please be sure to attach a copy of all Forms W-2 and W-2G for both spouses, and any Forms 1099 showing federal income tax withholding, to Form 8379. The processing of Form 8379 may be delayed if these forms are not attached, if the form is incomplete when filed, or if you attach a copy of your joint tax return."

The IRS instructions for Form 8379 may be helpful. You can download them from the following link.

This 'rjs' person is so unhelpful, if you dont know what you are answering then save your time and others too. The codes are from the IRS transcript.

@marlonjfm This is a 4 month old thread.  It no longer shows how many minutes elapsed as the responses were posted.  But I can tell that later into the thread, after the original response from SuperUser rjs, he does acknowledge the codes as being from the transcript.  Do you have a tax question of your own?
