See the discussion above.

You probably should talk to someone at TurboTax Support in realtime so they can question you and follow along.  It would be easier than trying to resolve the situation on a user community bulletin board.

Use the form at the link below to schedule a call back, or it may provide a number.  Hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific (8AM-12 Midnight Eastern) 7 days/week.

Where the form asks what product you are using, be sure in the dropdown menu to indicate "CD/download" and the proper operating system, then indicate which Edition.

You can file more that one return with the CD product you have.  So click on File and open your tax file, versus starting a new return.

At the initial TurboTax main screen, is there not a rectangular icon for the return you completed?  That's a shortcut to the return you've been working on.

If the shortcut icon is not in the interface, then using TurboTax Michael's method to OPEN the return off of the top left FILE menu should bring it up.  Then the next time you save it, it should create a rectangular icon in that interface to use as a shortcut each time you return.

Or maybe we don't understand what you mean by "every time I open it, TTax counts it like a new return."    If we are not understanding, then please describe in detail everything you are doing when you start the program.

When I start the program, my completed return that I have already efiled shows up in the que.  When I open it and then go to close it it asks if I want to save it  and I say "yes".  Then another return of the same name shows up in my que.  TTax is treating it like a whole second separate return.  This is not right. How can I have two returns with the same name??

What all do you see in the \My Documents\TurboTax folder, which is the default folder?   Are there duplicate returns there?

yes the duplicates are in this folder.

The ~ is a tilde file.   Those are temporary files that you normally don't see and normally are deleted.  But now Turbo Tax is leaving them in the folder in case something happens like your computer crashes.  Then you can go back.  Just ignore them.

Maybe I'm not understanding what he means by "shows up in the queue."    I thought he was getting multiple rectangular icons (shortcuts) inside the TurboTax program.   I guess I don't know what the queue is.

When you first open TurboTax you see a box with all your returns you have worked on.  This is the Que.

Are you talking about the duplicate file starting with the squiggly line ~ I mentioned above?  If you have more returns than 1 you can sort them so the Tilde filed sort to the end.

epo39b: I think what I'm calling the Que and what you're calling rectangular icons (shortcuts) are the returns.  These are what I'm getting duplicates of every time I open one of these returns.  Maybe it just happens to returns that I've already filed and it's just trying to keep track so the limit of 5 is not exceeded? I don't have the problem with unfinished returns.

I don’t think we are following you.  All the returns always show up.  Even the filed ones.  If you don’t want them to show up then you need to move them from that directory folder to another location.  Like put the filed returns in another folder or copy them off of your computer.

Everyone's missing my point.  Say  you completed a return and efiled it.  Now say you want to go back and open that return to look at it for some reason. When you are finished and want to close the return TTax will ask you if you want  to save it and of course you click "yes".  What happens to me is Ttax saves another copy of the return using the same name so now I have two returns with the same name!

It sounds like each time you work on the return, it makes a new rectangular icon at the main screen.

That's not the way it tracks the 5 Federal efiles.

"I have 2 returns with the same name."

But in the folder \My Documents\TurboTax they should not have the very same name.  Windows won't allow 2 files of the same exact name in the same folder.    So is there some slight difference when you look there in the folder?

In any case, I don't know why it's doing it.   See the info below on how to contact Support.

Ok guys, thanks for  your input I think I solved it.  I just had to go to "This PC/Documents/turbo tax" and delete the duplicate files and when I went back to the Turbo Tax software program and opened it, the duplicate returns were gone.  However, I'm still not sure why turbo tax created them to begin with.
