As long as you have not already filed--not efiled or mailed the return--you can open it back up to continue working on it.  The first steps below will tell you how to open it back up.  Then below that, I'll tell you how to get to the IP PIN interview.

  • Log in and go to "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Click that line or on the word SHOW to expand that section.
  • Choose 2017 tax year.
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
Once your return is open and past the blue-green screen, here's how to get to the IP PIN interview.   I'm going to give you 3 different ways, in case you are unable to use one.

  • Once the return is open and past the blue-green screen, click in the top right corner on SEARCH.
  • Enter IP PIN without quotes then click the magnifying glass--do not use the dropdown menu, or it might not display the "Jump.".
  • Choose Jump to IP PIN.
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"
  • If you choose "yes", it will have you enter it.

Or here's an alternate navigation:

  • Once the return is open and past the blue-green screen, in the left menu column, click Federal.
  • Then at the top choose Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  • Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"
  • If you choose "yes", it will have you enter it.

Or here's a third way:

  • Once the return is open and past the blue-green screen, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  • Next screen asks:  "Did you get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"
  • If you choose "yes", it will have you enter it.

I have completed my form and am ready to file but didn't enter my IRS Pin, how do I go back and enter my pin so I can efile?

Can you still open your return, or does TurboTax think you were finished, and your return is closed?  If so, we can tell you how to open it back up to finish anything.

And what do you mean by "IRS PIN?"  Is it a 6-digit IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) provided to certain victims of ID theft each year?

I received you response and it is great my problem, when I click show my 2017 tax form doesn't show. 2016 is the latest in the list. maybe I should cancel it and start over.

No. Don't start over.

When you go to "Your Tax Returns & Documents" and click SHOW to expand, perhaps it is already in 2017 mode by default.
Does it show a status for the 2017 Federal return?  If so, what is the status?
And is there a link that says "Add a State."

Try this:
Log out and close your browser and reopen it.
Log in again.
Is there a "Take me to my return" button?
If not, scroll down to "Your Tax Returns & Documents" and click on SHOW.
Do you see evidence that a 2017 return was prepared in that account?  Does it show a status for the 2017 Federal return?
If so, what is the status?   And is there an "Add a State" link?    (I can post a screen image if necesssary.)

Are you seeing any evidence that you prepared a 2017 return in that account?  If you see no evidence that you have prepared a 2017 return at all in that account, then you may have multiple accounts.  In that case, we can help you get back to the right account.    But it may be that you and I are simply not understanding each other.

NOTE:  Do NOT use this method to open a return to make changes/edits to an already-filed return (one that has actually been mailed or efiled.)   If you later need to make changes to an already-filed return, you have to go through the formal amending process, and your return must start off exactly as originally filed.
