My wife owns a small business. I do her books, pay statements, invoices, etc. Should my efforts be considered an expense or should I be sent a 1099-MISC?

Your work cannot be claimed as an expense by your wife's business. If she paid you, the business could claim the amount paid as an expense, but you will have to report the amount paid as income.
