I am a Scoutmaster for a boyscout troop. I paid $240 to go to summer camp to provide leadership to the Scouts. Camp provided food. Am I able to deduct the $240?

I also went to Wood Badge a Leadership course for $450 for the Boy scouts is this deductible?

Yes, you can deduct expenses related to volunteering for a qualified organization as long as those expenses are:

  • Directly and solely connected with the volunteer work you provided; and
  • Not reimbursed; and
  • Not considered personal, living, or family expenses.

You can deduct all of your out of pocket expenses as cash contributions as well as 14 cents per mile for travelling by auto in the service of your qualified volunteer organization.

To report volunteer expenses in TurboTax:

  • Click My Account (Top right of your screen).

  • Select Tools.

  • In the pop up window, select Topic Search.

  • In the search bar, type in charitable contributions.

  • Highlight it and select GO, and follow the prompts.

To benefit from the above, you must itemize your deductions.
