Wife worked in US before but now is working in India. Does she need a new ITIN?
Hi TurboTax Community,
My wife and I are both Indian citizens and got married in November 2019. I am currently working in the US on an H1B visa. My wife has worked in the US for about 5 years but moved to India in late 2018 and is working there since then. For filing the tax returns for 2019, from the other threads it looks like we have the following options:
1. file taxes separately
2. file taxes jointly
Questions:
1. In both options, she'll require an ITIN number. Since she has filed taxes in the US before she already has an ITIN number. Does she need to get a new ITIN number because she is no longer in the US? Does the ITIN number depend on the state? She used to work in a different state and I am currently working in a different state.
2. If she needs to get a new ITIN number - since generating a new ITIN number takes some time, would it be better to file the taxes separately?
3. Will I be able to exclude whatever she is paying as tax in India?
4. Is it possible to file tax returns using TurboTax in my case?
Thanks in advance!

No, your wife does not need to get another ITIN. Once you receive your ITIN it is used for all tax-related issues.
Yes, you should be able to get credit for the taxes your wife pays in India. You will file File Form 1116, Foreign Tax Credit to claim the foreign tax credit
