I clicked none of these apply. So why are they still asking if I want to treat my spouse as a resident?
You may inadvertently indicated that you wish to treat you spouse as a non-resident alien. If it insists on asking you the question, you might try this.
Same issue! I called TurboTax support and they did not know about this question. They said the form comes from IRS and this is new. I didn't answer the question but clicked the back button. Now it's not showing up anymore and letting me continue. It was suggested to click on the 'Feedback' link at the very bottom of the screen to tell TurboTax how I feel uncomfortable with this question. This feels like intimidation and persecution of immigrants regardless of citizenship.
No I did not have this box checked. It asked me anyway. I think this is harassment of people with hispanic/immigrant last names.
I don't think this was an error. These questions are dictated by the IRS, hence the Trump administration. It is clearly harassment and intimidation of immigrants regardless of citizenship.
No, this screen is popping up during the review of my personal info, before spouse. And it is occurring even when you don't check that box.
This form was already approved last summer when I went to the IRS seminar. You can see the form 1040 has changed. We have a lot of US citizens getting married to non citizens these days.
No, it is occurring even when 'None of the above apply'. It is harassment based on my last name.
That is different than how it's being asked in TurboTax. This form appears to require one of the boxes to be checked. But TurboTax is asking even after the 'Married filing jointly' has been indicated.
I didn't answer the question and just clicked on the Back button. It's not showing up again and letting me continue. But I'm wary to complete the process now.
Absolutely every post of yours is correct. I did NOT click on anything, it did NOT give me a choice to say I was a citizen. Just asked if I was a non-resident alien or a dual-citizen alien. No other choice. I have a different last name than my husband of 32 years which is Spanish. I used the feedback link and gave them a piece of my mind. Ridiculous question with no way to answer other than I am an alien. Thank you for posting your posts to point out the same experiences.
I got the same question last night when starting my taxes for this year. I have filed with my spouse for the last 7 years using TurboTax. It was a YES or NO question and I also felt that if I answered it is there any verbiage that could be used to say I was saying "yes, treat my ALIEN NON-RESIDENT spouse as a US Resident for the 2024 Year" - what the hell?
Hey TurboTax - could you tell us why you are asking this question for the first time?! Why is it yes or no? Why is there not a N/A option?
I found that on the prior-prior page, I had to select each person and state that each is a citizen. Then it no longer asked about the spouse being an alien.
It is a poor design choice in the software.
It should ask, Is anyone an alien?
very disconcerting … at the very least - its very poorly executed wording and bad communicatyion. a horrible way to start this years tax filing process! (I also reeks of some sort of involvement by El Stupido El Cheeto-in-chief :(
I got the same thing today as well. I had no idea what to make of it and the wording was weird. Anyway, I hit the back button and then looked at spouses information to see if something was a miss. Everything was the same as all the other years we have filed and when I went back to where it initially popped up, it was gone.
It doesn't make me feel very good about filing because it was such a weird thing. Anyway, it seems that for others who have also had this pop up, you have to back out and check your spouses information first before reviewing the primary filers information. But why it was even a thing to begin with when we're both citizens is unnerving.
