why is it trying to charge me for doing my taxes i thougt tis was for free

It depends on what you purchased, all the products are free to use, then when it is time to file you are charged a fee on all but the "Fee Edition Simple Tax Returns" version.  Click the link below to see the different options and what the rules are for free filing.

I see you are using TurboTax Deluxe online.  I am sorry for the confusion.  On our website, it says "Start for free, pay when you file"  It is free to enter your information to see the final result.  Once you decide to file, you need to pay.  The cost is $40 for a federal return and an additional $40 for a state return.  See the image below:
