Why does my state return say “ ready to mail”

"Ready to mail" means the return has not been efiled.  It means TurboTax thinks you plan to print and mail the return.  Is that how you wish to file, or do you want to go back in and change it to efile?   It's best if you can efile--it's safer, faster, and if you are due a refund, should be processed faster.   We can tell you how to change the filing method to efile, if you wish.

If you DO wish to file by printing and mailing, then TurboTax doesn't mail it for you.  You have to print, sign, date, and postal mail the return.    Again, it's best to efile if you can.

"Ready to mail" means the state tax return has not been e-filed and you have to print, sign, date and mail the state tax return.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print and mail a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/print-mail-return-turb...

It means that you have not E-filed the state tax return yet.

  • You may not have been able to E-file the return, or
  • You may have chosen to print and mail the return

You can go back through the FILE process and try to E-file the return.

Or you can mail it.

You will have to mail it yourself.  TurboTax will provide instructions if you choose this option.
