Probably because you didn't have enough withheld and/or have unearned income.  Federal and state tax laws differ, and some states have few or no deductions/credits.  Which state?

No one can see your tax return.  The usual reason for owing the state is that you did not have enough tax withheld from your paychecks.   Double check the amounts you entered from boxes 16 and 17 of your W-2 (s) to make sure you entered it correctly.
