Why do I owe money this year when I didn’t owe last year?

It depends. It could be because you had more income this year and got into a different tax bracket. Or you no longer qualify for a Tax Credits that you had last year. I would recommend to look at the 2 year comparison or look at the 2019 and 2020 returns side by side to see where the difference comes from.
