Why do i have to pay deluxe rate for both my returns when only one return required deluxe in the first place?

My state return is super simple, like a single form, and I could file it with the free edition. However, my federal return required me to purchase the deluxe edition, so i did, but now i have to pay an aditional $40 to file my state return?

If you use a paid version of online TurboTax then you have to use the corresponding paid state tax software.   If you do not want to do that, you could check your state's tax website to get the forms to prepare by hand for the state.
