Why did my federal refund go from 1452.00 to 3.00 simply by adding the state wages and taxes paid which I had not done with one of my W-2's?

When I finished my return I had a federal refund of 1452.00 and a state payment of 5043.00. I went back in input the state wages and the taxes paid. My federal refund went to 3.00 and my state now had a refund of 172.00.

Why did my federal refund go down by simply adding those two boxes?

It is possible that by adding the additional wages, you were thrown into a higher tax bracket.
