TurboTax Federal Free Edition is a free solution for simple federal returns – 1040-EZ or 1040A with the standard deduction.

If you upgrade to a higher-tier version or choose additional add-ons such as PLUS or Refund Processing, there will be additional fees.

To get an itemized breakdown of your charges, start by reviewing your fees. You can then remove any add-ons before you pay by following these instructions:

• Remove Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed upgrades
• Remove TurboTax State
• Remove PLUS More Help & Tools
• Remove Refund Processing Service Fee
• Remove MAX Assist & Defend
• Remove TurboTax Premium Service Benefits

You can also remove all fees by clearing your return and starting over, provided you haven't paid yet.

How can I get my free state return, file for free

There is an additional  fee to file state taxes with all of the online products except TurboTax Free Edition.  

  Please follow the link below to go to our website and click on the words "State Additional" below the price for TurboTax Deluxe to see all of the current information about filing state returns through TurboTax Online.

With the CD/Download version of TurboTax you are able to download one state.  You can prepare and print an unlimited number of tax returns for that one state.  However, additional fees apply for e-filing state returns and each additional (different) state you download will incur a fee.

@hick1w   Are you using the Online version or the Desktop installed program?  In the Online versions Deluxe and above state is a separate $40 to prepare.  Efiling is free and included.

In the Desktop programs Deluxe and above you get one free state Program download.  Then each state return (including the first one) is 19.99 to efile or free to print and mail.
